Title: Type-theoretic approach to the logic of questions.
Abstract. One of the most important distinctions in modern logic is that between classical and constructive reasoning. This distinction underlies two different paradigms in the foundations of mathematics: the set-theoretic paradigm, based on classical logic, and the type-theoretic paradigm, based on intuitionistic logic. As early as 1932, Andrei Kolmogorov suggested that the conflict between these two logics dissolves once they are understood as governing different realms: classical logic is a calculus of propositions, whereas intuitionistic logic is a calculus of problems. He later suggested that these two calculi should not be developed separately, but integrated into a unified logical apparatus encompassing both propositions and problems. Remarkably, a framework with a similar architecture has emerged in recent decades from an entirely different tradition. Inquisitive logic, developed within formal semantics, is a constructive logic of questions grounded in the classical logic of statements. In this talk, I will present a novel type-theoretic approach to inquisitive logic and argue that it can be understood as a realization of Kolmogorov’s program of integrating classical and constructive reasoning.
