Beyond Security: role of Conflict in Resilience Building (CoRe)

This project is funded under the ‘Peak Research’ section within the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme, following up on the previous OP VVV project KREAS (2018–2023). The press release regarding the award of the project can be found here.

Consortium of Participating Institutions

The CoRe project is a collaborative effort between multiple institutions, including:

Charles University, Prague (Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Hussite Theological Faculty, Protestant Theological Faculty), The Institute of Philosophy and the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Masaryk University, Brno (Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Law), University of Pardubice (Faculty of Arts)

Project Structure

The project consists of nine research objectives (výzkumné záměry, VZ). The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies (ÚFaR) is particularly involved in VZ1 ‘Conflict in Thought: Failure as a Path to Resilience’ (Philosophy) and partly in VZ2 ‘Conflict of Identities: Modern Art and Spirituality’ (Religious Studies).

A brief presentation of the entire project, including each research objective, is available in a recording of the opening conference (here).

VZ1: ‘Conflict in Thought – Failure as a Path to Resilience’

This research objective is based on the premise that thought itself is inherently conflictual—both internally and in relation to others. Conflict, therefore, belongs to the conditio humana and cannot ever be fully eliminated; but we can take advantage of it. This is done by developing discursive representations that enable the productive engagement with conflict, allowing individuals to manage it effectively and to become resilient to its destructive forms. This is the goal of so-called critical thinking, which, of course, does not always succeed.

Through conceptual, historical, legal, literary, and narrative analysis of the conflictual nature of experience and of conflict situations, the project will develop and implement specific procedures that to help resolve conflicts and strengthen societal resilience.
